Vision Test May Warn of Alzheimer’s 12 Years in Advance
Changes to your vision may be an early symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. That’s because the same type of beta-amyloid plaques that develop in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients also develop in the retinas of your eyes. Therefore, what researchers have found is that by using vision tests they may be able to spot Alzheimer’s disease 12 years before it’s diagnosed.
For a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers looked at data collected from 8,623 participants in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer Norfolk study in Norfolk, England. At the start of the study, the participants underwent an assessment of “visual sensitivity” that measured their reaction times and speed of visual processing.
This assessment required them to promptly press a button upon detecting the formation of a triangle amidst a backdrop of moving dots. Individuals who later developed dementia exhibited significantly delayed response times in identifying the triangle compared to those who did not develop dementia.
The researchers say that by using similar visual sensitivity tests, doctors may be able to determine if a patient is likely to develop Alzheimer’s 12 years before an official diagnosis. This may allow for early interventions to slow down the progression of this devastating disease.
Evening Exercise May Benefit People with Obesity
While you know exercise has important benefits for maintaining a healthy weight and warding off chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, does the time of day you work out matter? Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia found that exercising in the evening may maximize the benefits of exercise for people with obesity.
For this study published in the American Heart Association’s publication Diabetes Care, the researchers looked at data collected in the UK Biobank, which included 29,836 adults with a median age of 62.2 with obesity. The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on the time of day they did most of their exercise: morning, afternoon, or evening. The participants wore an activity tracker around the clock for seven days at the start of the study.
The researchers then followed up with those participants over 7.9 years, using data from the National Health Services and National Records of Scottland. What they found is that the evening exercisers—meaning those who did most of their higher intensity aerobic exercise between 6:00 pm and midnight—had the lowest risk of early death from cardiovascular disease.
What they also found is that the number of times the participants exercised in the evening was more important than the duration of their exercise. While experts say more research is needed to confirm these results, it does suggest that evening exercise for those with obesity may provide valuable health benefits.

The Peak-Flavor, Nutrient-Packed Olive Oil
Did you know that most supermarket oils sit on the shelves for months growing stale, musty, and even rancid– a far cry from the highly nutritional fresh-pressed version?
Olive oil is a staple in the longevity-boosting Mediterranean diet and linked to benefits like lower inflammation and better heart and brain health, in large part because of the antioxidants and nutrients it contains. But, like other oils, its nutritional value is highest right after being pressed– and degrades significantly after sitting on the shelf for months (or years).
That’s why T.J. Robinson, the “Olive Oil Hunter,” created the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club that ships farm-fresh, nutrient-rich artisanal olive oil straight to your door. Each oil is independently lab-certified to be 100% extra virgin and arrives direct from the farm with all its flavor and nutrition intact.

Can You Safely Boost Your Metabolism?

Genetics and age are the two biggest influences on your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is how quickly you burn food for energy. Yet, eating a balanced diet, strength training, avoiding processed foods, and getting more sleep can help you lose weight. Plus, protein-rich foods, coffee, and spices foods like chili, turmeric, and ginger may help to speed your metabolism up. (More)
Debunking the Cranberry UTI Myth + Its Biggest Benefits
Cranberry juice is often praised for its potential to reduce urinary tract infections (UTIs) by preventing harmful bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls. Yet, what may surprise you is that the scientific evidence to support this is inconclusive and may have more to do with the increase in liquid intake versus cranberry specifically. HOWEVER… researchers have found that cranberry juice has wide-reaching benefits, including supporting heart health, boosting immunity, promoting healthy skin, and more. (More)
Can Running Give You the Urgent Need to Poop?
If you experience a sudden urge to use the restroom while out for a run, or right after, you might have a “runner’s trot.” It affects over a third of runners, especially long-distance runners, women, and younger athletes. To prevent it, steer clear of high-fiber, fatty, and caffeinated foods before you run. Also, stay hydrated, avoid NSAIDs, and opt for loose-fitting clothing. (More)

Did you know the average person spends a staggering 1.5 years of their lifetime going to the bathroom? Most people visit the toilet between four and seven times a day, spending between one to three minutes to urinate and five to 10 minutes to poop. That’s equivalent to the time it would take to travel around the world more than 10 times on a commercial jet!
